Mulga Bill

map

The Mulga Bill rides are based on Bicycle NSW fun rides in the 90's. East Kurrajong Rd route is marked in red on the map. Lower Portland route follows red route to Sackville then the blue loop from Sackville Ferry.

For another map of the route, on bikely.com, with an extension back to Parramatta, see here.

Route description - Lower Portland route.

Windsor Station is a convenient starting point. Take an early train (trackwork permitting) from Sydney Central via Strathfield and Parramatta to Windsor.

You can buy food and drink in Windsor before the ride starts. There is a shop at Wilberforce, a cafe/shop at Ebenezer Historic Church, a road side shop on Sackville Rd before the turnoff to Lower Portland, and a shop at a caravan park on River Rd, but I wouldn't rely on them.

From the Windsor Station car park, head towards Windsor then turn right onto Richmond-Windsor Rd then left onto Macquarie St, and follow along to the lights at the T-junction at the end of the street. Turn left and proceed north over the Hawkesbury River on the Wilberforce (or Putty) Rd. (Alternative route is through the town and along river side rd, comes out at the bridge but there is a nasty left turn to make onto the main road.) There is a cycle lane marked along the main road all the way to Wilberforce. Turn right at King Rd (to Sackville)- dont miss it or you will end up in Colo or Singleton! Follow along to Ebenezer and turn off to the right on to Tizzanas Rd. A kilometre or so along turn right into Coromandel Rd which leads down to the old Church (b. 1809) by the River. The good people who look after the church have a tea and refreshments shop there and it is a pleasant spot for a break.

Return to Tizzanas Rd and turn right. Follow along past a winery and some holiday parks by the Hawkesbury. There is a dirt section for about 2 km before the road comes out at a T-intersection near the ferry to Portland. Don't go on the ferry, turn left at the T instead. (To avoid the dirt section, from Coromandel Rd return to Sackville Rd and follow along to West Portland Rd just before the ferry.) After a short distance there is a right turn onto West Portland Rd, up a steepish hill. At the top of the hill and along a little the road goes downhill for a bit and there is a sharp left onto Bull Ridge Rd up another hill - this is the road to Kurrajong as described in the Mulga Bill Kurrajong Route. Dont take this road, keep on straight ahead on Lower Portland Rd through a forested section. The road undulates and there are river glimpses. After a good climb there is a turn off to the left (Blaxlands Ridge Rd). Ignore this and keep on going. Also ignore a left turn to Lower Colo. There is then a lengthy downhill section which comes out at Lower Portland Ferry. The sign to the ferry was hard to spot, there is a right hand turn when the road levels out - if you end up at a large concrete bridge you have missed the turn to the ferry. Go back a few hundred metres. The road over the bridge will eventually get you to St Albans and Macdonald River I think - but thats another trip.

The ferry across the river is a good chance to have a break. There is a bit of grass on the other side where you could take a rest too. No shops here, although some cabins and waterfront parks along the road to the left may have supplies. To head back to Windsor turn right onto River Rd (left will get you to Wisemans Ferry) and follow back about 10 km to the Sackville Ferry. There is a caravan park on the river flat a few kms from Lower Portland, on your right. There is a shop there but it may not be open all year round. There is a steepish climb from here up to a T intersection where you meet a main road. Turn right at the T and its mainly downhill to the Sackville Ferry. On the other side of the river, follow Sackville Rd back to Ebenezer and Wilberforce, and the Putty Rd back to Windsor.

Trains run hourly back to Parramatta and Central, or follow the bikely route back to Parramatta.

Total distance about 65km.
